After a short but hard-fought illness, the family of Jkvr. Lydie Hilbertine Annie van der Kolk – von Weiler are sad to announce her passing on Sunday, Mother’s Day, May 12, 2019, in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada.
Whether referred to as “Lydie”, Mom, Oma or Ma, she was very much loved by family and friends.
Prior to retirement, Lydie was a long-time, well-respected social worker in Saint John. Retired now many years, Lydie enjoyed and experienced the adventure of life, and lived life to the fullest every day. She enjoyed family dinners, the company of friends, traveling, reading and animals.
Lydie was born in ‘s-Gravenhage, Nederland on November 25, 1928, to Jan and Gijsbertha Johanna van der Mijn.
Shortly after arriving in Canada following the war, Lydie met her husband, Joost. In the subsequent years, Lydie and Joost had three sons (Alan, Brian and Glenn).
Lydie is survived by Joost Robert, her husband of almost 66 years, two sons, Alan and Glenn, two daughters in law, Janet and Pam, nephew Sandy, granddaughters Lisa and Mandy, great grandson Sebastian and many good friends. She is predeceased by her son Brian and grandson Patrick.
The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of the Emergency Department of Saint John Regional Hospital and 5CS for their kindness and caring. Without their help the journey would have been much more difficult for all of us.
Arrangements are under the care of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, N.B. (634-7424). Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 16, 2019 from 2:00 – 3:00 PM. A Celebration of Life will be held immediately following the visitation at 3:00 PM. Donations in Lydie’s memory can be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
