Obituary of Verna May Webb
It is with heartfelt sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of our dear mother, Verna May (Short) Webb. A proud lifelong Saint Johner, Verna was born August 9, 1922. She was the wife of the late C. Burpee Webb and the eldest daughter of the late Charles “Russell” and Mabel Grace (Crandall) Short.
Verna is survived by her daughter, Carolyn “Beth” Webb (Ronald Neil Beauchesne) of Scarborough, ON & son, Curtis Burpee Webb (Carol Ann Dunn) of Rothesay; sister, Audrey Leverington of Calgary, AB and brother, Glenn Short (Rose) of Saint John; grandchildren - Brittany May & Brandon Maynard Webb; chosen daughter, Diane Matthews of Oshawa, ON; step-grandchildren - Jonathan Dunn, late Angela & sons, Adam & Carla Dunn all of Rothesay and Katie Ohsberg, Ian & sons of Fredericton along with many, many extended family, friends and neighbours.
Besides her husband and parents, Verna was predeceased by brothers - Gerald (Joan) and Carl (Janet Finnigan of Moncton), chosen daughter, Judy (Belding) Lazzarato; beloved cousin Betty & Timer Evans and lifelong friends Audrey & Gordon Powe, Jean & Nellie MacDonald and Doris & Ron Patterson.
As a young north ender, she began her journey of faith at Victoria (Main) Street Baptist and when she moved East, she was one of the founding members of Forest Hills Baptist Church, 60 years ago. Verna attended Saint John Vocational School. She then became a highly valued member in the offices of Jos. A. Likely Limited, where she worked for 35 years.
The family would like to gratefully thank the many staff and residents of Dobbelsteyn’s Special Care Home for friendship, love & care while being her “home” over the past 7 years, as well as the SJRH Emergency Department and 5CN for their wonderful care and to Bobby’s Hospice for their calm comfort and compassion in Verna’s final days. Everyone of you, doctors, nurses, PSW’s & staff were so helpful with kind understanding.
