Pauline Long (nee Hargrove)

Obituary of Pauline Clare Long (nee Hargrove)

It is with profound sadness that the family of Pauline Clare (nee Hargrove) Long announce her death at Bobby’s Hospice on February 10th, 2025.

Pauline is survived by her beloved children: Gregory (Kim), Wayne (Denise) and Heather (Roy), her grandchildren: Joe (Ada), Kiera (Kyle), Khristian (Emma), Konnor (Anna), Cody, and Chelsey (Mac); and her 5 great-grandchildren: Darcy, Sam, Clara, Frances, and Jude; her sister, Mary Carr and several special nieces and nephews. Pauline is predeceased by her husband Malcolm Long; her parents, Ronald “Buster” and Grace Hargrove; her parents-in-law, Percy and Sadie Long; and in-laws: Mitchell Carr, Ron and Jean & Anna Long, Alma and William Currie.

Pauline’s early years were lived on Prince Street in the West side of Saint John until her family moved to Lorneville into the Wilson Homestead on the Millside. Pauline was the first child for Buster and Grace and was thrilled to become a big sister to Mary when she was 6 years old, a role she took seriously for the next 81 years. Pauline began her working life at Murray & Gregory Limited where she met the love of her life Mac Long. After a whirlwind romance, they were married in 1959 and were blessed to have 45 years together. Pauline and Mac settled on Mansfield Street in West Saint John where they began their family together. In their sweet little home, they welcomed family, friends and neighbours into their life and their love. It was there that they took such pleasure in raising their children. In their retirement years, they moved to the Long Family Homestead on the Kingston Peninsula, lovingly restoring the farmhouse into a joy filled home where many family parties and celebrations were held over the years.

Pauline was a member of the Anglican Church of Canada, having membership with St. Luke’s Anglican Church and the Parish of Kingston. She lived out her faith by being active in the life of the church by serving as a vestry member, a diocesan Lay Reader, a choir member, a lifetime member of the ACW serving locally and at the diocesan level, a quilter and an active volunteer in the Loaves and Fishes Meals program. Pauline’s faith was important to her, and she lived her life showing God’s love to all those who were blessed to come across her path.

Pauline’s commitment to serving her neighbours was exemplified in her volunteer work. She was a longtime volunteer with the lunch program at the St. John the Baptist School and was a reading elf with the younger school aged children. Pauline worked tirelessly for the church over the years and could always be found in the kitchen working hard. She and Mac were members of the Kingston Historical Society, taking great pride in the history of the community. Pauline also took great pleasure in volunteering at the Imperial Theatre, Parkland Saint John, with the Saint John Sea Dogs and supporting the Liberal Party.

Throughout her working life Pauline worked at Murray & Gregory Limited, the Cold Storage main office with her sister Mary, at Simpson Sears, and as secretary at St. Luke’s Anglican Church. Many people, however, will remember her best as Mrs. Long from the preschool she ran from her home on Mansfield Street that welcomed so many of the West Side children in. In her retirement years, an opportunity came for Pauline and her sister Mary to go to work at the newly opened Bobby’s Hospice as the cooks in the kitchen. Pauline found such satisfaction in this work and felt blessed to be able to offer such comfort to those in their end-of-life moments.

Pauline will be greatly missed by her family and her beautiful friends.

The family would like to thank Dr. Chris O’Brien, the staff of Bobby’s Hospice and the Palliative Care floor of the SJRH for their gentle care of Pauline in her final weeks.
