Celebration of Life

Obituary of Gordon Arthur Thorne
In Loving Memory of Gordon Arthur Thorne - son, father, grandfather, friend.
Gordon, a masterful carpenter, devoted craftsman, and lover of island life, passed away on February 25th at the age of 73. His hands built more than just fine furniture - they shaped a life full of adventure, generosity, and connection.
Born on March 24th, 1951, in Saint John, Gordon had a natural gift for working with wood, turning raw materials into pieces of timeless beauty. He leaves behind a legacy of exquisite grandfather clocks, cabinets and tables. Whether crafting elegant furniture or fixing something for a friend, he poured his heart into every detail. His skills were unmatched, but it was his generous spirit that truly set him apart.
A man drawn to the ocean, Gordon made his home on Deer Island, where he embraced the untamed beauty of coastal life with strength and independence. When he wasn't building or helping a neighbor, he could be found enjoying the ocean breeze, always at home where the land met the water. He also found joy in vacationing in Sint Eustatius, a tiny Dutch island in the Caribbean, embracing the culture, warmth, and vibrant energy of the island.
Bold, outgoing, and full of life, Gordon never met a stranger - only future friends. His charm, quick wit, and willingness to lend a hand made him someone people were naturally drawn to. He had little patience for unnecessary rules, choosing instead to live on his own terms - fearless, free-spirited, and always up for an adventure. Whether working with his hands, sharing a story, or sitting down for a game of cards, Gordon made every moment count. He loved the camaraderie of a good game, where laughter and competition blended seamlessly. A devoted Rottweiler lover, he had a special bond with his dogs. His love for them was unwavering, and they in turn, were fiercely loyal to him.
Gordon leaves behind, parents; Gladys Thorne, and the late Ralph Thorne, brothers; Donald Thorne (Juana) Ricky Thorne (Donna) sister Lynn McNamara (Mike). Children; Derek Thorne (Donna), Greg Thorne (Stacy) Lisa Thorne. Grandchildren; Gavin, Owen, Emma and step grandchildren, Cole and Jasmyn and several nieces and nephews, along with a legacy of craftsmanship, generosity, and a life well-lived. His presence will be deeply missed but forever cherished in the hearts of those who knew him.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB, (506-634-7424). A celebration of Gordon's life will be held from Brenan's on Saturday, March 1, 2025, from 1:00 – 4:00 PM. In honor of his love for animals, donations may be made to the Saint John SPCA Animal Rescue or charity of choice in his memory.
Rest easy, Gordon. Your hands may be still, but the beauty you created - both in wood and in the lives you touched - will endure.
