Obituary of Eleanor Hanlon

It is with profound sadness that the family of Eleanor (Wood) Hanlon announce her passing on April 13th, 2025 at Kennebec Nursing home, Saint John NB after an ongoing illnesses. Born on December 24th, 1935, in Saint John NB, she was the daughter of the late Hayward Wood and Agnes (Truswell) Wood.

Mom had an incredible passion for her family, friends, food and fitness.  Mom grew up with a very busy household where everyone was welcome and there were always lovely and lively times especially when her mom’s brothers would drop by. Mom was able to bring that sense of an open home part of our lives growing up.

Eleanor is survived by her children Michael (Charleen) of Stony Plain AB, Jane, Carolyn and Nancy of Saint John; grandchildren Jessica and Alex of Edmonton, her brother Donald (Heather) Wood, siblings in law Cyril, Doreen Marcon, Anne McNamara (Mike) and Patrick (Sharron), Dot Hanlon (Louis), Mary Hanlon (James) and as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and Eleanor’s lifelong friend Bette Campbell.

In addition to her parents, Eleanor was predeceased by her loving husband Paul O’Neill Hanlon,  her brothers George Wood and Everett Truwell, sisters in law Janet Wood and Carol Truswell : siblings in law Connie Winchester (Vince), Mary Conway (Dick), Helen Vickers (Gerald), Gerard (Theresa), Louis, Maurice (Pat), Francis “Butch”, and James “Yankee” Hanlon, Patricia (Cyril), parents-in-laws Edward and Eleanor(O’Neill) Hanlon, Joe Marcon and her daughter-in-law Charleen Hanlon

Considering Mom’s well lived life, what always comes to mind is comfort and joy. We could always count on Mom to be there to make life easier for us – helping us move, supporting with babysitting and always having our favourite meals and desserts ready for both special occasions and day to day. She knew all of our most loved treats and would often bring them in her luggage when visiting.

Mom was known to always be up for a laugh – it could be cartoons, Carol Burnett,Get Smart and any visit with her brother George! In addition some of Mom’s best memories are related to her love of fitness – daily walks with Dad, swimming at Lake Banook, her love of the weekly exercise classes in Millidgeville and her annual trips to Grand Lake with her buddy Bette.

We were incredibly lucky to have Mom at home for our childhood - we would always have our lunch ready, fresh cookies coming from the oven and the cleanest of homes. She also loved to travel and she and Dad made so many trips to Florida, cross country drives and many explorations of parts of the East Coast. Mom and Dad didn’t slow down their travels after becoming empty nesters and annually travelled to visit us in our various locales. Although Mom loved her travels, she was always very happy to come home and work on her New York Times crossword puzzles.

Our family would like to express our thanks to the staff of Kennebec Manor and their incredible care of Mom.
