Imelda O'Connor

Obituary of Imelda Josephine O'Connor

Imelda J. O’Connor of Monarch Hall, Riverview, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2025. Born in Sussex, she was the daughter of the late Bernard and Gertrude (Long) O’Connor. Imelda devoted her life to care, service, and faith.

She began her nursing journey at Saint Joseph’s School of Nursing and went on to earn her Bachelor of Nursing from Dalhousie University and a Master of Education from the University of New Brunswick. Imelda spent many years as a respected nursing instructor at the Saint John School of Nursing, where she helped shape the careers of countless students. She later served as a dedicated worker’s advocate for WorkSafeNB, always committed to supporting and defending the well-being of injured workers.

A devout Catholic, Imelda was deeply engaged in the life of the Church, both in practice and in spirit. Her faith was not just a part of her life; it was the foundation of who she was. Church was her constant source of strength, purpose, and joy. She attended Mass as often as possible, sometimes more than once a day, and was involved in numerous aspects of parish life. Whether quietly praying in a pew, offering help behind the scenes, or participating in ministry, Imelda’s presence was a steady and humble force. Her unwavering devotion and quiet acts of service touched many, and her faith-filled life was a true reflection of her heart.

Imelda will be deeply missed by her brother, Joseph O’Connor of Hamilton. He is the sole surviving member of her immediate family. She is also survived by six cherished nieces and nephews: Beth Simkins-Burrows (Chad), Colleen Simmonds (Kevin), Monica McHugh (Jeff), Matthew Hughes (Andrea), Frank Campbell, and Michael Campbell (Jade), as well as several adored great-nieces and great-nephews. She was predeceased by her siblings: Paul O’Connor (1992), Yvonne Simkins (2005), Eleanor Hughes (2007), Elizabeth Campbell (2010), and Anne O’Connor (2018).

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Monarch Hall in Riverview for the compassionate care and kindness they showed Imelda throughout her time there. Their support and dedication brought comfort and dignity in her final days and will not be forgotten.
