Obituary of Hugh "Hughie" Thomas McHugh
It is with heavy hearts, that we announce the passing of Hugh Thomas McHugh, who left us peacefully on May 28th, 2025, at the Saint John Regional Hospital.
Born on July 23rd, 1954, in Saint John, NB, Hughie was a devoted father, proud grandfather, beloved brother, and cherished friend to many. He began his working life at Floor Fashions in Saint John’s North End and later found his calling in carpentry. He worked with Pawn Construction before ultimately finishing his professional career with Paul Davis Restorations, retiring in 2018. Hughie was known for his strong work ethic and craftsmanship. He was also the kind of person who always had a story—whether it was about the people he met, the jobs he worked on, or one of his many adventures along the way. His stories, always full of humour and heart, were just as much a part of who he was as his tools and his talent. And at the end of a long day, nothing made Hughie happier than kicking back with a cold Alpine in hand, surrounded by good company.
Throughout his incredibly full life, Hughie was widely known for his athletic talent and competitive spirit. No matter the sport, he excelled—whether it was baseball, hockey, or on the golf course. He was an accomplished ballplayer, a skilled hockey player, and a scratch golfer (if only he could have learned how to putt).
Hughie is survived by his son, Ryan McHugh (Amanda) and his beloved grandchildren: Hughie McHugh, Lillie McHugh and Tobias McHugh. He is also lovingly remembered by his siblings: Judy (Paul Riley), Rose (Roger Leger), Tom (Cathy), Jim (Gloria), Mary Jane (David Foster), Karen (Donald Roberts) and Peter (Debbie).
Hughie was predeceased by his beloved wife, Kathy Banks; his father, Ronald McHugh and his mother, Lois (Ryan) McHugh.
He will be deeply missed by his lifelong friend, Lance "Turtle" Crawford, as well as by his many nieces and nephews, all of whom he held close to his heart.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff of 4CN at the Saint John Regional Hospital for their kindness and compassion during Hughie’s final days. A special thank you to Madison, whose care and warmth brought great comfort during a difficult time.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506-634-7424) where visitation will be held on Monday, June 2, 2025 from 2:00 - 8:00 PM. A private interment will take place in St. Jospeh's Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the SPCA in Hughie’s memory, in honour of his lifelong love for dogs.
