Obituary of Melvin James Blanchard

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Melvin James Blanchard announces his passing on May 31, 2025, at Bobby’s Hospice, Saint John, NB, after a long and courageous battle with leukemia. He was 93 years old. Melvin was the beloved husband of Annette (Gallant) Blanchard for an incredible 72 years.

Born on March 23, 1932, in Piusville, PEI, Melvin moved the family to Saint John in 1964. He was a dedicated and skilled welder, starting in the late 50’s and working for many years at J D Irving Equipment and Joe’s Machine Shop before fulfilling a lifelong dream. In the early-1980s, he established Blanchard’s Welding and Trucking on Dever Road, where he worked alongside his sons until his retirement. His strong work ethic and craftsmanship were hallmarks of his character.
Beyond his professional life, Melvin possessed a vibrant spirit and a deep love for horses. In his sixties, he pursued his passion, becoming a trainer and driver, racing across New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. These years brought him immense joy and countless cherished memories. He also treasured his time spent at the family cottage in Fortune Cove, PEI, finding peace and rejuvenation in the island's beauty.

Melvin will be deeply missed by his children: Barry (Sharon), Rick (Cindy), Randy (Debbie), Dwayne (Sandra), Donna LeBlanc (George Denton), Darrell (Sherry), and Darren; his 11 grandchildren: Jennifer Hansen, Crystal Godsoe (Cliff), Matthew Maher (Max), Stacey Tarr (Bryant Floyd), Michael Blanchard (Stephanie), Jesse Blanchard (Ashley McKiel), Jay Blanchard (Sara Johnston), Renée Archibald (Justin), Andrea LeBlanc (Dan Nelson), Ashley Blanchard (Richard Belliveau), and Theresa Blanchard; and his 13 great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his brother, Don (Mary) Jones of Piusville, PEI, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Hubert and Eva Blanchard-Jones, brother Leo, sister Bernice, and his eldest daughter, Barbara Anne Maher, and her husband, Gerry Maher.

Melvin’s legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. His strength, resilience, and unwavering dedication to his family will be remembered with love and admiration. The family would like to thank the nursing staff of 5C South at the Saint John Regional Hospital and Dr. Emily Love, Dr. Chris O’Brien, Nurses, Staff and Volunteers of Bobby’s Hospice for their exceptional care and compassion.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506-634-7424) where visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 4, 2025 from 4-8 PM.  A funeral service will be held from Brenan’s Chapel on Thursday, June 5, 2025 at 12:00 PM.  Immediately following a reception will be held at Brenan’s Reception Centre. Donations in Melvin’s memory may be made to Bobby’s Hospice or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
