Obituary of Ralph E. Smith

Smith, Ralph E. … The death of Ralph Eldon Smith of Saint John, NB, husband of Joan Marie (Ronald) Smith, occurred on Sunday, May 25, 2008 at his residence. Born in Flushing, Long Island, NY on January 12, 1934, he was the son of the late Frederick and Florence (Stultz) Smith. Following the death of his father in 1945, he was brought up in Hampstead, NB and later graduated from Rothesay Collegiate and enjoyed a 40 year career with NB Tel in various locations and positions. Ralph was a member of the International Rotary Club, Saint John Probus Club, Canada Jaycees, Boy Scouts of Canada, Canada Games Organizing Team, Stoney Run Salmon Lodge, president of Saint John Executive Association, chairman of Saint John Transit Commission, president of Moncton Golf and Country Club, director of Riverside Golf and Country Club, vice-president of the New Brunswick Museum, member of the Board of Stewards and Trustees of Portland United Church. His hobbies included salmon fishing, hunting, golfing, skiing and woodworking. His was a full and vigorous life, he always rose to a challenge and he inspired many with his courage. Survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Joan; one daughter, Janet (John) Diamond of Riverview, NB; one son, Stephen (Tara) Smith of Saint John; five grandchildren, Jeffrey, Gregory and Robert Diamond, Rachelle and Alexander Smith; as well he will be missed by extended family members and many very dear and close friends. Resting at Brenan’s Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row. Saint John, (506) 634-7424, with visiting on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A Memorial Service will be held from Portland United Church, 50 Newport Crescent on Thursday, May 29, 2008 at 1:00 pm. Interment in Fernhill Cemetery. Remembrances may be made to the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation or the Oncology Department or any charity of choice.
