It is with great sadness that the family of Donald Allison Hughes of Cambridge-Narrows announces his passing at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Thursday, July 26, 2018 after a brief period of falling health.
Don was born in Saint John on July 6, 1932; he was a son of the late Beulah (Kelly) and Bernard Hughes and lived for many years in Quispamsis, NB. He graduated from Rothesay Consolidated School and went on to a career as a Research Technician at the Atlantic Sugar Refinery and later at the Federal Research Station in Fredericton.
In 1953 he married Barbara Miller and they had a family of four sons and one daughter before moving to Fredericton in 1967. Don was predeceased by his eldest son Steven on August 26, 2013.
Don is survived by sons David of Toronto, Bruce (Monica) of Fredericton, Kevin (Joanne) of Quispamsis, daughter Susan (Jim) of Saint John, his wife Barbara of Fredericton; five grandchildren: Samantha (Craig) of Calgary, Allison of Fredericton, Lindsay (Josh) of Edmonton, Kyle of Quispamsis and Nikki of Toronto; six great-grandchildren, Kyla, Bryson, Ryder, Emma, Sophie, and Jaxson: and his only surviving sibling John "Jack" (Betty) of Quispamsis.
Along with several member of his family, Don shared a great love of horses and riding. He was a gifted musician and composer of a number of folk songs and ballads, especially based on stories of Canadian History in which he had a keen interest.
A special thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff at the Saint John Regional Hospital for their understanding, care and kindness during Don’s time with them.
At Don’s request there will be no visitation. A private family gathering will be held at a later date.
