Obituary of Florence Hazel Fraser
The passing of Florence Hazel Fraser of Saint John from this life to life eternal with her Lord occurred peacefully on October 27, 2008 at the Kings Way Care Centre at the age of 100. Hazel was born Florence Hazel Webb in Westchester Station, NS on June 4, 1908 to Charles and Margaret (Hollingsworth) Webb. She was the second youngest in a family of six brothers; two sisters; and one half sister – all of whom predeceased her. Hazel was the wife of Rev. Douglass M. Fraser who predeceased her in 1980. She ministered as a pastor’s wife for forty three years – from their marriage in 1936 until his retirement in 1979. They ministered in Central Bedeque, PEI; Chipman, NB; and in Saint John at the Fundamental Baptist Church. Hazel is survived directly by her only son, Terence of Saint John and his wife Dale; two grandsons, Jon Fraser of Saint John, and Joel Fraser and his wife Elizabeth; and three great-grand children – Holly, Benjamin, and Wesley all of Cranston, Rhode Island. She was predeceased by her parents; six brothers – Raymond, Earle, Russell, Leo, Bligh, and Ivan; two sisters, Amy and Ella; and by one half sister, Alveretta. Throughout her early life Hazel became noted for her writing and poetic abilities. Selections of her stories and poems were published over the years in local newspapers and in the Kindred Spirits magazine of Prince Edward Island. Although she had always had a talent for sketching and painting, in later years she became better known for her watercolours. Many of her works continue to grace the walls of family and friends. Her main calling was, however, to serve her Lord in whatever capacity she could. She spent many hours entertaining guests in the various parsonages, helping with church music, and organizing and conducting children’s programs. She also served beside her husband several years in directing children’s summer camp work at Camp Miracle on Grand Lake. She was a diligent and intelligent student of the Scriptures – occasionally providing a bit of timely input to her husband’s ministry when she felt it was appropriate. Up until the age of 99 she was able to maintain herself in her own home, and finally only a loss of mobility forced her to change to nursing home residence. Resting at Brenan’s Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, (634-7424) with visiting on Thursday, October 30 from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM. Funeral service will be at the Fundamental Baptist Church, 885 Danells Drive, Saint John West on Friday, October 31, 2008 at 2 PM. Interment will be in Cedar Hill Extension Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Fundamental Baptist Church designated to either Windcrest Bible Camp Fund or the Building Fund, or to the charity of choice. www.brenansfh.com
