Obituary of Allen Clarence Phillips
Allen Clarence Phillips of Saint John, husband of Margaret McKay (Gibb) Phillips, passed away on Monday, May 11, 2009 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born at Saint John on April 18, 1927, he was a son of the late Pearle Allen and Lillian Gladys (Hannan) Phillips. Allen worked for more than 34 years at Red Rose Tea (Spice Department). He enjoyed playing darts, being a founding member of the “Red Rose Aces” at the Carleton York Club. As an amateur magician, Allen entertained many with his tricks, especially card tricks, and could also be found cheering for the Toronto Blue Jays from his favorite chair. He was a loving husband and father, and was known for his friendliness and hospitality. He did his part to make his community a better place. In addition to his wife of 58 years (whom he married on Hallowe’en in 1950), Allen is survived by a son, David Phillips (Carole) of Grand Bay-Westfield; two brothers, Robert Phillips (Marge) of Florida and Danny Phillips of Saint John; and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Muriel Black. Resting at Brenan’s Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 11:30 AM from Brenan’s Chapel. Interment will take place in Ocean View Memorial Gardens. For those who wish, remembrances to any charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
