Obituary of Ronald Murray Hughes
The death of Ronald Murray Hughes of 170 Kennebecasis Drive, Saint John, husband of Doreene G. MacNutt) Hughes, occurred on Saturday, December 6, 2008 at the Saint John Regional Hospital, surrounded by his family. Born at Saint John, he was a son of the late Allan R. and Catherine (Townsend) Hughes. Ronald spent 42 dedicated years with the New Brunswick Telephone Company, retiring in 1982 as a senior Engineering Supervisor. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, and was a former member of the Board of Directors of the Saint John Animal Rescue League who were responsible for building the first animal crematorium in Saint John. He was on the board of Crime Stoppers and was a member of the Haynes Lake Fishing Club where he spent many happy times in his younger years. He was a avid gardener and “back yard man”, and really enjoyed working with the group responsible for starting the first Community Gardens at Rockwood Park which everyone enjoys. Besides his wife of 56 years, he is survived by three children, Sandra F. of Dartmouth, NS, David M. of Saint John, and Dianne E. (Lane) of Quispamsis; two grandchildren, Kathryn (Katie) Dianne and Michael Nicholas of Dartmouth; and several nieces and nephews. Ronald was predeceased by a sister, Lewis. In keeping with Ronald’s wishes, a private family service will be held, followed by interment in Fernhill Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances to the Saint John Animal Rescue League would be appreciated by the family. The funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424).
