Obituary of Lawrence Sterling Mundee

Lawrence Sterling Mundee of Saint John, husband of Joyce Winnifred (Hatfield) (Moore) Mundee, passed away on Thursday, May 21, 2009 at the Ridgewood Veteran’s Centre. Born at Saint John on March 1, 1921, he was the son of the late Harry S. and Mary (Galbraith) Mundee. Larry was a graduate of Saint John High School Class of 1939, and of UNB Fredericton Class of 1943 in Engineering. Following university, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy, and served in World War II as an Officer in Anti-submarine Detection. He was sent to specific factories to check and test parts of the Asdic System to be sure it met Naval Specifications, and then was sent out on Frigates to ensure these systems were working properly. These systems guarded the Convoys as they crossed the Atlantic Ocean. After the war, he joined NBTel as a professional engineer where he participated in the construction of the first Trans Canada Microwave System for long distance telephone service, and the construction of Repeater Stations. In 1978, he joined the management team of Finance Revenue where he was responsible for the Division of Revenue from the Trans Canada Telephone Network. He retired in 1983 after 38 years of service. Larry was a member of Germain Street Baptist Church, and formerly a member of Ludlow, Charlotte, and Hillcrest Baptist Churches. He was a Life Member of the Association of Professional Engineers, a Life Member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, a member of Probus Club, the former Kiwanis Golden “K”, now known as the Goodwill Social Club, and a member of the Senior Keenagers Club of Hillcrest Baptist Church. He spent many summers at Sand Point on the Kingston Peninsula, and enjoyed his days in or on the river. In addition to his wife, Joyce, Larry is survived by his son, Dean Mundee (Pamela) of Fredericton; two step-sons, Donald Moore (Donna) of Rothesay and David Moore (Valerie) of Fredericton; two grandchildren, Jeffrey Mundee and Heather Mundee; four step-grandchildren, Donald Moore (Keely), Amy Wear (Andrew), Steven Moore (Birte), and Julie Moore (Greg); four step great grandchildren, Abigail and Kayla Wear, and Isabelle and Alexander Moore; two special cousins, Pauline (Nice) Howett of Petitcodiac and Roberta (Galbraith) Wilson of Lorneville; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Larry was predeceased by his first wife, Connie Llewellyn (Belyea) Mundee. Resting at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. The funeral service will be held on Monday at 1:00 PM from Brenan’s Chapel. Interment will take place in Ocean View Memorial Gardens.
