Obituary of Dale Leslie Peters
Dale Leslie Peters, devoted husband to Lynn (Wigginton) Peters passed away unexpectedly but peacefully after a brief illness at Saint John Regional Hospital on Monday, September 17, 2018. Dale is survived by his wife; his three sons, Christopher (Maureen), Graeme (Kim) and Jared (Gillian); his two grandchildren, Evelynn and Anna and his sister, Linda (David). He was predeceased by his parents, Ralph and Lorna Peters and his older brother, Brian.
He will be remembered for his work as a dedicated teacher at city schools, in particular Lorne Middle School. After retirement, he was an enthusiastic volunteer in the Elementary Literacy program.
Dale was born in Indore, India, where his parents were serving as United Church of Canada missionaries, before coming to Canada when he was 10 years old. Dale returned to India after university to travel and teach. He and his wife Lynn taught for two years in a tiny coastal outport in Newfoundland called Grey River. Throughout his life, Dale would fondly recall memories of his time in Newfoundland.
Dale loved to sing. In his younger days he was a founding member of the folk sensation Congenial Pentemaction Sings. More recently, he was part of Before the Mast, a local sea shanty ensemble, where he could share both his love of music and storytelling. He was also involved with Men in Music and the Saint John Men’s Chorus. He frequently could be heard playing his guitar, and often regaled his family with songs. He was an avid hiker, woodworker, kayaker (building his own boats with his father and sons) and reader. He enjoyed nothing more than sharing a book read aloud with Lynn. Dale loved walking the beach at Saint’s Rest with Lynn and their dog Nellie.
The family would like to express their sincere thanks and gratitude to the doctors, nurses and therapists of the Saint John Regional Hospital.
At Dale’s request there will be no visitation. A service celebrating his life will be held on Saturday, September 22, 2018 at 2:00 pm at Portland United Church. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424).
For those who wish, remembrances can be made to the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation, Médecins Sans Frontières or the charity of your choice.
