Obituary of Donald Kirby Newstead
The death of Donald K. Newstead, of Summerville, NB, Husband of G. Joyce (Short), occurred on Friday, March 18, 2011 at Bobby’s Hope House in Saint John, NB. Born on April 2, 1932 in Arcola, Saskatchewan, son of the late John and Frances (Smith) Newstead, he moved with his family at a young age to the Interior of British Columbia. Besides his wife of 49 years Don leaves to mourn daughters Kelly Newstead of Summerville, Heather (Theron) Janzen of Calgary and Lisa (Mike) Hachey of Quispamsis and grandchildren Max and Carly Hachey. Sisters: Delphine (Bob) Birkness, Trail, BC, Patricia (Manolis) Hiotis, Summerland, BC, Brothers: William Newstead, Prince George, BC, and John (late Georgina) Newstead, Blind Bay, BC, also several nieces and nephews. After retiring from the military Don trained and worked as a carpenter then worked many years as a land surveyor for Murdock Lingley Land Surveyors, until his retirement in 1995. Don served with the Royal Canadian Army (RCHA) from 1949 to 1971. Postings outside Canada included Korea, Indo China, Vietnam and twice in Germany. Special Duty Service in Canada included the 1970 FLQ Crisis. Don was a Life member of The Royal Canadian Legion, Peninsula Br. 62, Life member of the Korean Veterans Association Saint John, member of the Atlantic Gunners Association, Peninsula Pearls Seniors Group and Summerville United Church. Besides his parents, Don was predeceased by nephew Lorne Newstead, brother Arnold Wallace, grand nephew Evan Fraser Smith and sisters-in-law Georgina Newstead and Helen Smith. Following cremation the family will receive relatives and friends at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, (506)634-7424 from 4-7 PM on Tuesday, March 22, 2011. A Royal Canadian Legion Tribute to a Veteran Service will be held on Tuesday, March 22, 2011at 4:00 PM. A Memorial Service will be held at Summerville United Church at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, March 23, 2011. Burial to be determined at a later time. In lieu of flowers Remembrances to the Evan Fraser Smith Memorial Scholarship Fund, Hospice – Bobby’s Hope House, RCL Peninsula Br. 62 or a charity of donors choice.
