Obituary of D. Eileen Flood

After a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease, it is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of D. Eileen (McEachern) Flood on September 29, 2018 at Rocmaura Nursing Home, Saint John. Eileen was born on February 14, 1936, the youngest of five who quickly became her older siblings special "Valentine". She was the daughter of the late Henry and Ethel (McEachern) McEachern. Eileen spent her childhood years in Quispamsis and always shared fond memories of the McEachern homestead. She loved swimming at Meenans Cove, skating on Ritchie Lake and learning to drive on the Model Farm Road. Eileen was a proud graduate of Netherwood Girls School, Rothesay in 1954. She followed in her father’s and brother’s footsteps by working at the Telegraph Journal and Evening Times Globe on Crown Street for 12 years. It was there that she developed a love of current events and always started her day reading the paper until she could no longer do so. Eileen met Richard "Dick" Flood at a dance in 1960 at the Lily Lake Pavilion. They were married at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on October 9, 1965 and moved to Fundy Heights on the West Side. Mom became a true West Sider and resided on Elmore Crescent until her illness. Her grandchildren Loren and Hilary were the loves of her life! She affectionately became known as "Nanny Noodles" amongst family and neighbours. Those who knew Eileen quickly realized and if they didn’t she told them, her political views. She and Dick worked tirelessly for many municipal, provincial and federal campaigns over the years. After her husband’s passing, she worked casually at both Gerald Merrithew and Elsie Wayne’s Constituency offices. She was also a member of the Saint John Parking Commission for a period of time. Eileen’s fashion sense was important to her. She was known for her beautifully coiffed grey hair. Even in her final years at Rocmaura, the staff always commented on her clothing and fuchsia lipstick! Eileen is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Flood-Waugh; son-in-law, Stephen Waugh; beautiful granddaughters, Loren and Hilary; sister, Helen Leonard (Jerry) of Kitchener, Ontario; several cousins, nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was also predeceased by her husband, Richard "Dick" Flood in 1987; brothers, Edgar (Florence) and Robert (Gloria); as well as sister, Elizabeth. The family would like to thank the entire staff of Rocmaura for the wonderful care that was always provided to Eileen over the past four years. The support and friendship shown towards her and her family will never be forgotten. Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, with visiting on Thursday, October 4, 2018 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 360 Dufferin Row, Saint John on Friday, October 5, 2018 at 12:00 Noon. Interment to take place in Holy Cross Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances in Eileen’s name may be made to the Rocmaura Foundation or a charity of the donor’s choice.
