Obituary of Herbert Douglas Robertson
Herbert (Herb) Douglas Robertson, husband of Donna Pauline (Wetmore) Robertson, went to be with his Saviour on Sunday, January 23, 2011 at Kings Way Care Centre (KWCC), Quispamsis. Herb was born in Kars, Kings Co. N.B., on October 12, 1923 and was one of 17 children born to Harry and Annie (Smith) Robertson. He was an adherent of First Wesleyan Church, Saint John, and while a resident of KWCC attended Kings Way Assembly in Quispamsis. During the Second World War, Herb served in the Infantry & Paratroops. After his discharge, he owned and operated a taxi company in Saint John. In 1951, Herb joined the Saint John Police Department where he served for 32 years, retiring as Deputy Chief. A hard worker, Herb was known for helping his neighbours, often clearing snow and mowing lawns, or fixing things in his workshop. A self-taught plumber, electrician and carpenter, Herb built a camp near his birthplace where he enjoyed hunting and cutting firewood. He and his family took four trips across North America in their 5th wheel trailer and delighted in the mountains and natural scenery. In recent years, Herb developed a passion for “Find a Word” puzzles, doing them by the hour. In addition to Donna, his wife of 63 years, Herb leaves to mourn one daughter, Trena (Ken) Moore of Quispamsis, two sons, Brian of Ontario and Blake (Janice) of Pennsylvania, and five grandchildren, Sophi, Gregory, Kelley, Andrea and Wesley. Herb was predeceased by an infant son, Wayne Douglas, sisters Blanche, Fern, Phyllis, Vera, Clara and Doris and brothers Leslie, Edgar, Paul, Harry, Ernest, George, Lorne, Bruce, Harold, Gordon and David. Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Monday, January 24, 2011 from 6 to 9 PM and on Tuesday, January 25, 2011 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. A “Tribute to a Veteran Service” will be held on Monday at 7:30 p.m. The funeral service will be held at Brenan’s Chapel on Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at 12 noon, with interment in the spring at Bayview Cemetery, Hatfield Point. Remembrances to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or Kings Way Care Centre Foundation would be appreciated by the family. Herb’s family wish to express their gratitude to the staff of KWCC for the exemplary care and heartfelt love shown. We couldn’t have asked for better.
