Obituary of Mary Ellen Stevens
Mary Ellen "Nellie" Stevens of Saint John, wife of the late John Francis Stevens, passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, July 27, 2011 at Rocmaura Nursing Home. Born at Saint John on July 19, 1922, she was a daughter of the late Fred and Florence (Lowney) McGraw. Nellie was a graduate of Saint Vincent’s Girls High School, and also of Mount Carmel Academy. She worked for many years for Dr. E. Pugh, and she volunteered at the C.Y.O. Centre on Cliff Street. In her spare time, Nellie enjoyed playing bingo, knitting, and making handicrafts. Nellie is survived by one son, Paul Stevens of Saint John; two sisters, Marie Little of Saint John and Mary Ann Newman of Cambridge, Ontario; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Nellie was predeceased by sisters Peggy McGraw, Florence Ketch, and Kay Gorman; and by brothers Joseph, Fred, and William McGraw. Although there will be no visiting, relatives and friends are invited to attend the graveside service, which will be held on Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at 1:00 PM at Fernhill Cemetery, 200 Westmorland Road. For those who wish, remembrances to Rocmaura Nursing Home or any charity of the donor's choice would be appreciated by the family. The funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424).
