Obituary of Richard Henry Oland
The death of Richard Henry Oland, O.C., B.A., D.Litt, of Rothesay, husband of Constance Katherine Oland (nee Connell) occurred on Thursday, July 07, 2011. Born in Rothesay, he was the son of the late Philip Warburton Oland and Mary Howard Oland. Mr. Oland attended Rothesay Collegiate School, Regiopolis College, University of New Brunswick (B.A.) and Wallerstein Laboratories where he obtained a Certificate of Brewing Technology. Mr. Oland was an accomplished businessman. He was the President and CEO of Far End Corporation and Kingshurst Estates Limited, President of Brookville Transport Limited, Vice-President of Moosehead Breweries Limited and General Manager of Brookville Manufacturing Co. While at Moosehead, he was instrumental in designing and building one of the world’s most advanced and fastest beer packaging lines at the Saint John Brewery. He also had directorships in several organizations including Ganong Bros. Limited, the Huntsman Marine Science Center and the United Way of Greater Saint John Inc. Mr. Oland was very active in the Community. He was the President of the 1985 Saint John Jeux Canada Games, Director and Vice-Chair of the 1985 Jeux Canada Games Foundation Inc., Past President of the New Brunswick Museum, Chairman of ParticipACTION and a Councilor for the Town of Rothesay. He was honoured with many awards, including an Officer of the Order of Canada, Honorary Degree from UNB (D.Litt), Sport N.B. Executive of the Year Award, Transportation Person of the Year Award and the Rotary Paul Harris Fellowship Award in appreciation of significant contribution to the community. "Dick" led an active lifestyle. On Sundays he could be found on the slopes of Poley Mountain or riding horseback through Kingshurst. He enjoyed fishing on the banks of the Miramichi and was a Life Member of the Miramichi Salmon Association. He was also an avid sailor, having competed in numerous races on the Kennebecasis River. His keenness in sailing led to his participation in international races with his yacht "Vela Veloce" where he won the 2010 US-IRC National Championship and the 2010 Canadian Sailing Association International Sailor Award. In addition to his wife of 46 years, he is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth (Lisa) Jane Bustin (Matthew W. Bustin) and Jacqueline Lee Walsh (Brent L. Walsh); and by one son, Dennis James Oland (Lisa S. Oland), all of Rothesay; one sister Jane H. Toward of Rothesay and one brother Derek M. F. Oland (Jacqueline) of New River Beach; seven grandchildren, Susan Bustin, Sarah Walsh, Benjamin Walsh, Henry Oland, Hannah Oland, Emily Oland, and Andru Ferguson; and several nieces and nephews. Resting at Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Sunday, July 10, 2011 from 2-4 and 6-8PM and Monday, July 11, 2011 from 2-4 and 6-8PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Rothesay, on Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at 12:00 noon. Interment will take place in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cemetery at a later date. For those who wish, remembrances to any charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
