Obituary of Kenneth Elmer Steeves
Kenneth Elmer Steeves of Saint John, husband of Kathleen "Kay" A. (Whelpley) Steeves, passed away on Sunday, August 7, 2011 at the Ridgewood Veteran’s Centre. Born at Pictou, Nova Scotia on January 23, 1925, he was a son of the late Howard and Margaret (Landry) Steeves. Ken worked for the City of Saint John in the Public Works Department for 32 years. He was a Veteran of World War II, serving overseas from 1942-1945. Ken enjoyed sports, and played hockey until he was 75 years old. He also enjoyed baseball and bowling, and often traveled to Maine to sing at Stacey’s Jamboree. Ken was also a member of Jervis Bay Branch 53 of the Royal Canadian Legion, and was a Sergeant in the Armed Forces Reserves. In addition to his wife, Ken is survived by his children, Clarence Steeves of Grand Bay-Westfield, Deborah Long (James) of Public Landing, Mary Ganong (David) of Quispamsis, and Helen Horgan (Mike) of Saint John; grandchildren Ken Steeves, Ben Hovey, Russell Long, Diane Long, Matthew Horgan, Shelly Horgan, Michelle Horgan, Holly Steeves and Kevin Steeves; great grandchildren Liam, Gavin, Lyra, and Maiya; an aunt, Pearl Williams of Ontario; and several nieces and nephews. Ken was predeceased by a daughter, Diane Wickens; a son Harold Steeves; and by brothers Harold, Robert, and Charles Steeves. Resting at Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Wednesday, August 10, 2011 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. The funeral service will be held from Brenan's Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday, August 11, 2011 at 2:00 PM. Interment will take place in Cedar Hill Extension Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances to the Kidney Foundation or the Ridgewood Veteran’s Van Fund would be appreciated by the family. A Royal Canadian Legion Tribute service will be held on Wednesday at 7 PM at the funeral home.
