Obituary of Samuel Koven
Surrounded by his loving family, Sam Koven passed away peacefully at home Thursday, February 24th, 2011. Born 79 years ago on December 9th, 1931 in Saint John, Sam was the son of Maurice & Rose Koven, the brother of Joseph (Ruth), Anne (Sonny) & Francis (Philip). He was a lifelong resident of the city. Sam is remembered by many who bought their shoes and were entertained by non-stop jokes at the Grand Shoe Store he owned on Main Street. He went on to a sterling career as a nursing orderly, known for slapping a plaster cast on many a broken bone at the Saint John General Hospital. Sam was the beloved husband of Elizabeth for the past 52 years. He was the loving father of Heather & George, Rhonda & Lorne, Karen, Mark & Crystal. He was an especially proud and devoted grandfather to Ryan, Meaghan & Pat, Brittany, Jocelyn & Michael, Jeffrey, Jillian, Hanna, Daniel, Aaron, Adam, Rebecca, Olivia, Hannah & Zachary. He was great-grandfather to Jacob. Known for his joke-a-minute delivery, Sam enjoyed every moment he could get with friends and family. He enjoyed a unique relationship with his grandchildren who will have a treasure of fond memories that will remain with them. Known for his warmth and humour, Sam was an inspiration to all who knew him. The funeral will be held Sunday, February 27th, 2011 at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB at 12 Noon. Donations may be made to The Anne Elman Scholarship for Children In the Arts at Interaction Children’s Theatre Company, the Canadian Cancer Society and the Canadian Diabetes Foundation.
