Obituary of Herman Andrew Sullivan
Dr. Herman Andrew Sullivan of Rothesay, husband of Patricia (McBride) Sullivan, passed away on Wednesday, March 14, 2012 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born at the "new" Saint John General Hospital on November 30, 1933, he was a son of the late Herman Eagles and Dorothy Constance (Wark) Sullivan. Dr. Sullivan was educated at Victoria School and Saint John High School for Junior and Senior Matriculation. He registered at McGill University in 1951, acquiring a Bachelor of Science degree in 1955 and M.D., C.M. in 1957. Following a rotating internship at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal in 1958, he obtained the Licentiate of the Medical College of Canada and continued training in General Surgery at the Lancaster DVA Hospital and the Royal Victoria Hospital. He entered the McGill Certification program in Urology in 1960, completing it in 1963, when Certification in Urology was granted and Fellowship in the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada after a separate written examination. Appointments were approved at the Saint John General Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital, and Lancaster Hospital Urology with a Urology practice opened in 1963. He was a member of the Saint John Medical Society, the New Brunswick Medical Society, Canadian Medical Association, Canadian Urologal Association and received his Fellowship of the American College of Surgeons in 1968. He joined the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University in 1972, becoming Assistant Professor and Department Head in Saint John. He was Past President of the Saint John Medical Society, as well as Past President of the St. Patrick’s Society of Saint John, and Past Commodore of the Royal Kennebeccasis Yacht Club and the Martinon Yacht Club, and Past President of the New Brunswick Sailing Association. He was a Champion Sailor, medaling in the 1977 Canada Summer Games. Interested in sport, Dr. Sullivan was captain of the McGill University rugby team, and played soccer for HCMS Brunswicker, hockey for McGill Medicine, where he was also involved in track, swimming, and wrestling. He was a member of the Thistle St. Andrew’s Curling Club, the Riverside Golf and Country Club, and the Carleton Curling Club. Among his other interests was flying, being a member of the Flying Club, the Canadian Owners and Pilot’s Association, the Hibernia Lodge #3 F. & A. M., and the Log Cabin Fishing Club. Dr. Sullivan also loved the Opera, and enjoyed classical music, especially Mozart and Beethoven. Dr. Sullivan is survived by his wife, Patricia; his sons, Sean P. Sullivan (Susan) of Bowmanville, Ontario, Eric E. Sullivan of Halifax, and H. Gary Sullivan (Colleen) of Saint John; grandchildren Herman Connor, Alexandra Colleen, Michael Calvin, and Rebecca Sullivan; a sister, Catherine Manning (John) of Saint John; brothers Charles K. Sullivan (Ruth) of Saint John, and David L. Sullivan (Carol) of Fredericton; and several nieces and nephews. Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Saturday, March 17, 2012 from 2-4 PM, and Sunday, March 18, 2012 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. The funeral service will be held on Monday at 2:00 PM from the Church of St. Andrew and St. David. Interment will take place in Ocean View Memorial Gardens. For those who wish, remembrances to PRO Kids or the Canadian Mental Health Association would be appreciated by the family.
