After retirement, Leland taught himself how to use the computer, he enjoyed playing games, especially FreeCell. Barbequing, gardening, practical jokes, shuffleboard, and hosting Sunday suppers were among his favourite hobbies. He was an all around handyman who helped everyone, especially helping his grandchildren eat their vegetables. Leland is survived by two daughters: Linda Carpenter of Saint John, Susan Carpenter of Kingston Peninsula; three sons: William "Bill" Carpenter (Connie) of Rothesay, Paul Carpenter (Corinne) of Quispamsis, and Kevin Carpenter (Donna) of Rothesay; one brother, Murray Carpenter (Thelma) of Saint John; sister-in-law, Wilma Taylor; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; several cousins, nieces and nephews.
