Obituary of Gladys Evans Irish
Gladys Evans Irish passed peacefully away on Thursday, April 14, 2011 at the Saint John Regional Hospital at the age of 101. She was born in Herring Neck, Newfoundland, on September 7, 1909 and remained a true Newfoundlander all her days. After finishing High School in her little out port community, she took the coastal boat to St. John’s where she attended teacher’s college in what would become Memorial University of Newfoundland. She then moved to Grand Falls to teach. Just after the war, she met and married Leslie (Rusty) Irish. Shortly after his death in 1977, she moved to Saint John NB. She loved to play the piano and spent a lot of her time playing for the Sunday school at St. George’s Anglican Church or whenever we had a party at the house. She also loved bridge, and writing poetry. She loved her great grandchildren and did not seem to mind, when upon just recently, all seven would swarm around her to help open her Christmas/Birthday gifts. She is survived by her son, Peter (Eileen), three grandchildren: Gerald (Lana), Sean (Lori) of Saint John, NB, Mark (Terri) of Denver, CO., seven great grandchildren: (Katelyn, David, Kyle, William, Jenna, Hunter, Camren) along with a sister-in-law Joan Irish, nieces, nephews and cousins in Moncton, Pickering, Ontario and Newfoundland. She is predeceased by her husband Leslie (Rusty) in 1977. Resting at Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A funeral service will be held on Monday, April 18, 2011 at 2:00 PM from Brenan’s Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will take place at a later date in Newfoundland. As expressions of sympathy, remembrances to the CNIB or any charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
