Obituary of Gertrude G. Pledge
With her family at her side the death of Gert Pledge, wife of the late Edward "Ted" G. Pledge occurred at the Church of St. John and St. Stephen Home on Thursday, November 1, 2012. She was born on January 26, 1915 in West Saint John to the late John and Catherine (Stack) Sweeney. Gert was proud to graduate from Saint John Vocational School in 1932. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother; devoting her life to her family. Gert was a member of St. Pius X Church, Catholic Women’s League, St. Elizabeth’s Society, and Saint John Silver Threads. The Pledge Family was one of the original families of St. Pius X Parish. She is survived by her son, Douglas (Sharon) of Saint John; daughters: Nancy Brun (Albert) and Rita Pledge both of Saint John; seven grandchildren: Stephen (Debra), Chris (Tara), and Ian Pledge (Rolande), Mike Brun (Catherine), Carrie Macfarlane (Wayne), Stephanie Rollins (Dean) and Jennifer Shannon; seven great-grandchildren: Matthew, Megan, Molly, Gwen, Quinn, Sam and Griffin, brother-in-law, Harold Pledge and several nieces and nephews. Gert was predeceased by her husband, parents and brother, Leo. She is the last surviving member of her immediate family. Resting at Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424) with visiting on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held from St. Pius X Church, 316 Somerset Street on Saturday, November 3, 2012 at 10:00 am. Interment will take place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. For those who wish remembrances to the charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
