Obituary of Sister Carmel T. Stancato

Sister Carmel Teresa Stancato (Sister Ann Carmel) passed away peacefully at the Ruth Ross Residence on Monday, December 31, 2018. She was born in Vancouver, British Columbia on October 20, 1926, and was a daughter of the late Peter and Carmela Maria (Anselmo) Stancato. She received her education at SacredHeartSchool and St. Ann’s Academy in Vancouver. She entered the Sisters of Charity of the Immaculate Conception on September 8, 1944. She is survived by her sisters, Theresa Smith and Rosemarie Abbinante; and one brother, John Stancato. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by two sisters, Angela Waddell and Jeana Abbinante. Sister Ann Carmel first served as a housekeeper and music teacher from 1946-1967 in Woodstock, Johnville, Fredericton, Saint John, New Brunswick, and in Powell River, British Columbia and Vancouver. She received her A.R.C.T. Teacher’s Diploma in Music and her Bachelor of Arts and her teaching certificate from the University of British Columbia. Sister Carmel taught in Vancouver and Burnaby until 1987. After a renewal program in Spokane, Washington, Sister Carmel became involved in parish ministry with the First Nations People in Northern Saskatchewan until 1994. Returning to Saint John, she was in Pastoral Care at Saint John Regional Hospital from 1994-1995. Sister Stancato returned to Vancouver and ministered in Pastoral Care at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Vancouver until she moved to Seton Villa in Burnaby in 2001 where she was a Spiritual Care presence to the elderly at the Villa. In 2011 she relocated to Saint John, NB and resided at Ruth Ross Residence until the time of her passing. Arrangements are under the care of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (634-7424). Visitation will take place at Carmel Chapel – Ruth Ross Residence, 105 Burpee Ave. Saint John, on Thursday, January 3, 2019 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm, with Evening Prayer Vigil taking place at 7:00 pm at Carmel Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from Carmel Chapel on Friday, January 4, 2018 at 10:00 am. Interment will take place at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. www.BrenansFH.com
