Obituary of Lawrence Glenwood Foster
Went to be with his Lord on January 9, 2019 at Ridgewood Veterans Wing, Saint John, in his 99th year, a result of too many Happy Birthdays.
Larry was born near Woodstock, NB, the son of Frederick and Martha Foster, and spent his early life on the family farm until moving to Saint John in 1942. He was predeceased by his parents; a sister, Leota Quigg in 1997; his first wife, Florence (Babs), in 1976; his second wife, Eleanor, in 1997; a daughter-in-law, Elaine Foster, in 2005; and a son-in-law, Byron Meredith, in 2011.
He is survived and will be greatly missed by his sister Phyllis Wilson of Woodstock, NB; his brother Vaughn Foster (Joyce) of Fredericton, NB; his daughter, Barbara Meredith of Hinton, AB; his sons Wayne Foster of Middle Lahave, NS; Brian Foster (Judy) of Saint John, NB; Gary Foster (Pauline) of Saint John, NB; and Mark Foster (Kathleen) of Rothesay, NB; his stepdaughter Gail Norris of Niagara Falls, ON; his grandchildren Susan Meredith, North Bay, ON; Douglas Meredith (Shelley), Moncton, NB; Steven Meredith (Deanne), Halifax, NS; Sharon Meredith (Timothy Trahan), Hinton, AB; Lauren Gaudet (Craig), Rothesay, NB; Gregory Foster (Joy), Grimsby, ON; Kathleen Foster Crouse (Darryl), Pine Grove, NS; Marion Foster, Grande Prairie, AB; Andrew Foster, Kingston, ON; Margo Foster (Taryn Pimento), Toronto, ON; Luke Foster (Caroline Barry), Rothesay, NB; Matt Foster (Melinda), Grand Bay, NB; Erica Foster (Dan Scozylas), Seattle, WA; and Rachel Foster, Halifax, NS; 19 great-grandchildren, numerous nephews and nieces, and his special friend Janet Fowler.
Besides being a loving and supportive husband, father, and grandfather, Larry was a committed Christian, and much of his life revolved around his church, Central Baptist, in Saint John, where he served for many decades in various capacities: as deacon, trustee, and financial secretary. He was employed by the Ford Motor Company for 32 years, retiring in 1979 to live a more relaxed life, though in retirement he was often busier than ever, as family, friends, and neighbours called upon his expertise in various areas; he was always willing to lend a helping hand. Besides being a World War II Veteran, he also served for many years with the Canadian Forces Reserve Army, receiving the CD award for long service.
Larry had a wealth of friends, with whom he pursued his favourite outdoor activities: fishing, hunting, and snowmobiling, and he never tired of telling stories about his exploits. He was also an active member of the Lancaster Golden Service Club. Around home he kept busy gardening, splitting wood, blowing snow, helping his neighbours, and keeping all his machines and appliances in working order. He had a knack for repairing anything that needed fixing, and could often be found helping one of his sons with a home building or maintenance project. During his stay at Ridgewood Veterans Wing, he was well looked after by the kind, dedicated, caring nurses and staff.
Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Sunday, January 13, 2019 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm. A funeral service will take place on Monday, January 14, 2019 at 2:00 PM from Brenan’s Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at a later date in Ocean View Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ridgewood Veterans Wing or to a charity of the donor’s choice. Please place online condolences and remembrances at www.brenansfh.com.
