Obituary of Gertrude Ruby Mabey
It is with great sadness that the family of Gertrude R. Mabey, beloved wife of Don E. Mabey and devoted mother of Suzanne, Michael, and Deirdre, announces her passing which occurred on Wednesday, October 26, 2016 at the Saint John Regional Hospital surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Chéticamp, NS on January 25, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Ruby (LeBrun) LeBoutillier. Following graduation from Mt. Allison University, Gertrude and her husband Don lived in various communities across Atlantic Canada and Manitoba. In addition to working as a teacher, Gertrude volunteered with a number of community groups and was a tireless advocate of the women’s movement. She was a fierce defender of the rights of others and didn’t shy from participating in political protests for causes she championed. She loved plants, cats, and watching hockey. Gertrude had a sharp wit and great and unique sense of humour. She appreciated intense conversation and loved to debate current issues.
Along with her husband, Don, of 57 years, Gertrude will be deeply missed by her children, Michael Mabey (Heather Savoy) and Deirdre Mabey; and her cherished grandsons Christopher Mabey and Brandon Mabey.
She was predeceased by her parents; her daughter Suzanne Ruby Mabey; and her brothers, Herbert and Stanley LeBoutillier.
Arrangements are under the care of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (634-7424). A private Celebration of Life will be held for family, and a private interment will take place at a later date. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to any charity of the donor’s choice and would be appreciated by the family.
