Obituary of Rita Ann Garey

The family of Rita Ann Garey nee Daley, wife of the late Leo Joseph Garey, announce her passing, which occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Thursday, January 21, 2016. Born in Saint John on April 27, 1920 she was a daughter of the late Daniel and Margaret Augusta (Clark) Daley. Many friends and family will remember the delicious meals enjoyed at her table, both in Saint John and at the family cottage at New River Beach. Rita had a keen eye for decorating and her home was a testament to this fact. In addition to being a prodigious knitter, she was a talented seamstress and had worked for many years for Myer Hoffman, a tailor who was well known in Saint John. Her granddaughter Kathryn was a tremendous help to her family in spending a lot of time with her grandmother at the hospital. Rita is survived by her three children, James Robert (Debra) Garey, of Saint John; Mary Jane (James) Asher, of Fredericton; and Bridget Ann (Philip) Venner, of Whistler, BC; her four grandchildren Kathryn Asher (Adam Gilmore), Elizabeth Asher, Matthew and Luke Venner, and several nieces and nephews. Aside from her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her three brothers Robert, Lawrence, and Frank, brothers in law Walter and Donald and John Garey, and sisters in law Lillian Garey, Alice Garey and Edna Richards. The family would like to thank Maureen, Emilienne and Maryanne for the wonderful care provided to Rita in her home and at hospital. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (634-7424). A memorial mass will be celebrated from St. Rose of Lima Church, 541 Milford Rd., Saint John, on Saturday, March 5, 2016 at 12:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, it is Rita’s request that any donations in her memory be made to Romero House.
