Obituary of Georgianna Muriel Laviolette

Laviolette, Georgie (Childerhouse) – Georgianna Muriel Laviolette, widow of the late Jean Henri "John" Laviolette, passed away on Thursday, January 31, at the Parkland Shannex. She was born in Saint John, NB on February 18, 1922 to the late W. Henry and Elizabeth (nee Sullivan) Childerhouse. She attended Holy Trinity School and graduated from St. John Vocation School as a licensed hairdresser. In 1945 she married John Laviolette, a handsome young soldier who happened to be boarding in the flat just above the Childerhouse home at 301 Rockland Road. After his discharge from the army at the end of World War II, John began a banking career which took him and Georgie to various locations in New Brunswick and Quebec. He finally settled into a management position at the regional headquarters of the Royal Bank of Canada in downtown Montreal. Georgie thoroughly enjoyed being a homemaker and hostess for the many social events that would be put on for fellow bankers and their clients. Georgie and John both looked forward to their many winter vacations in Florida. A highlight of their extensive travels was the Caribbean Cruise which they took on the occasion of their fiftieth wedding anniversary.It was only later in life that Georgie decided to try her hand at painting. It did not take long before it became evident that she was a gifted artist. Nothing pleased her more than to be able to give one of her art pieces to family members and friends. Following her husband’s death in 2004, Georgie returned to Saint John, the city of her birth, after sixty-two years of being away. She resided at Chateau de Champlain where she actively took part in every social event and was often considered "the life of the party". It was only in the last years that her family moved her to Parkland Saint John where she received exceptional medical and personal care. Besides her husband and her parents, she was predeceased by her sisters who were her life-long dearest friends: Gertrude Lawson, Agnes Campbell, Julia Glynn, Wilhelmina Kunitzky, Geraldine Olsen and Aleada Johnson. Georgie is survived by her cherished brother, Stephen Childerhouse of Winnipeg, Manitoba, as well as many nieces and nephews who were a source of great joy in her life. Arrangements have been entrusted to Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), where a visitation will be held on Monday, February 4, from 6 – 8 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 5, from Holy Redeemer Parish, 316 Somerset St., at 12 noon. Interment will take place at Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery, Dieppe, NB at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
