Obituary of Ethel Mae Flewelling
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Ethel Flewelling, wife of the late Edward Flewelling, announces her passing which occurred on Friday, August 4, 2017 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born on October 31, 1921 in Saint John, Ethel was a daughter of the late William and Marguerite (Harrity) Wheaton. Ethel was a life member of the YM-YWCA, served as President of the Saint John YWCA, and was a recipient of the prestigious Red Triangle Award. She also served as president of both the St. John and St. Stephen Nursing Home Auxiliary and the Kinnette Club. Ethel was a member of the Saint John Naturalist Club, the N.B. Historical Society, the N.B.Museum, the Union Club, and a long-standing member of the R.K.Y.C. Both Ethel and her husband Edward were boating enthusiasts, having been associated with yachting for a lifetime. Ethel belonged to Portland United Church and was an active member of their quilting guild. Ethel’s passion for gardening was evident in the beautiful displays of flowers around her home. Ethel is survived by her son, Rick Flewelling (Connie) of British Columbia; nephew Bill London (Kathy) of Rothesay; nieces, Willa London of Nova Scotia, Eleanore Moffat and Maryanne Hazenberg both of Ontario; many great and great-great nephews and nieces as well as goddaughter, Anita Hamilton of Nova Scotia. In addition to her husband, Edward and her parents, Ethel was predeceased by her sisters, Rose, Connie, Myrna and Willa, and by her niece, Stephanie Lynn. Her family would like to express their sincere thanks and appreciation to the staff at both the St. John and St. Stephen Nursing Home and Shannex Parkland (Lily Court) in Saint John for the excellent care and compassion shown to Ethel. Arrangements are under the care of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424) with visiting on Wednesday, August 9, 2017 from 10 AM -12 PM. The funeral service will immediately follow at 12:00 PM in Brenan’s Chapel. Interment will take place in Cedar Hill Extension Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the YMCA or a charity of the donor’s choice.
