Obituary of Mary Elizabeth Lenihan
It is with great sadness that the family of the late Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Lenihan of West Saint John, announce her sudden passing, which occurred with family at her side on February 11, 2019 at the Saint John Regional Hospital.
Born on February 16, 1928 in Saint John, she was the eldest child of the late Matthew and Genevieve (Findlay) Russell. She was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Robert V. Lenihan; an infant daughter; as well as her brothers Ronald Russell and David Russell.
She is lovingly remembered by her sons Michael (Cathy Fennell) and Mark (Suzanne Belliveau), both of Ottawa; and daughter Mary Jane of Saint John. Betty is survived by her sisters Maureen Boerner of New York, Isabel (late Ronald) Coates of Boston, and Rosalind (late Patrick) Murray of Ottawa; as well as several nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her dog Lucy, one of many canine companions who shared her life.
She attended St Vincent's Girls High School and Mount Carmel Academy. Following her marriage, she and her husband lived in Gander and Montreal, before settling in Moncton to raise their family. Betty assisted her husband with his travel agency business, before being employed as a secretary with the Correctional Service of Canada until retirement. She was a long-time parishioner of Holy Family Catholic Church and a member of the CWL.
Arrangements are under the care of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, N.B. (634-7424). A private burial will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery in the spring. Remembrances may be made to the Alzheimer Society of N.B. Our dear Mother faced Alzheimer's disease with great dignity and courage. She remained at home in her daughter’s care for the long duration of her illness. To have cared for her, who so lovingly cared for us, was a great honour.
