Obituary of Audrey Eileen Powe
It is with great sadness that the family of Audrey Eileen Powe of Long Reach announces her passing, which occurred on Sunday, August 27, 2017. Audrey was the loving wife of the late Gordon Arthur Powe and mother to her late son, Kevin Elliott Powe. She was born in Saint John on December 31, 1924 to the late Albert and Elva Hildred (Hamilton) Leyden; Audrey grew up in the North End. As a young girl she sang in the choirs of the Victoria Street and Main Street Baptist Churches, continuing her love of singing with the Long Reach United Church well into her 80's. Upon graduating from Saint John High School in 1942, she worked for the Bank of Nova Scotia. After staying home with sons Gary, Kevin and Brian, Audrey re-entered the work force at Simpson Sears in the office as head cashier. Upon her retirement in 1972, Long Reach became her permanent residence. Audrey enjoyed swimming in the Saint John River, playing cards, Scrabble, baking and being surrounded by her family and friends. Audrey is survived by her sons, Gary (Pauline) of Clifton Royal, NB and Brian (Karen) of Long Reach, NB; grandchildren, Keith (Cyndi) of Kingston, NB, Scott (Heather Johnson) of Saint John, NB, Ryan (Michelle) of Winnipegosis, MB, Sean of Beaverbank, NS and Erin (Johnathan Gravel) of Bedford, NS; as well as great-grandchildren, Brandon, Sarah, Alex, Henry and William. Audrey is also survived by her sister-in-law, Doreen Higgins (Richard); brother-in-law, Norman Powe (Dona); several nieces and nephews and special friends, Verna Webb, Helen Finley and Gladys Titus. She was predeceased by her brother, Murray Leyden (Lillian); sister-in-law, Connie Erbs (John) and friend, Dodie Kinnear (Doug). A heartfelt thank you to Patricia (Patty) Tracey for giving Audrey love, special care and attention over many years. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 29, 2017 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424) and Wednesday, August 30, 2017 from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM at Long Reach United Church. The funeral service will be held from Long Reach United Church on Wednesday, August 30, 2017 at 1:00 PM with interment to follow in Long Reach United Church Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to Long Reach United Church or the Saint John SPCA Animal Rescue.
