Obituary of Barbara Valentine Likely

The death of Barbara Valentine Likely long time resident of Grand Bay-Westfield, wife of the late Joseph Alexander Likely II, occurred on Friday, March 18, 2016. Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia on February 14, 1920 she was the daughter of Major Roderic Churchill Macdonald and Barbara Glencross Macdonald. She is survived by brothers Roderic Glen and David Churchill Macdonald of Rothesay and Moncton respectively. Barbara attended McGill University, MacDonald College School of Dietetics, in Montreal where she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree and the Lieutenant-Governor’s silver medal in 1941. She fulfilled her internship at the Montreal General Hospital. During WWII Barbara worked as head dietician at the King Edward Memorial Hospital, Hamilton, Bermuda. Barbara served as the Metropolitan Vice Chairman of the United Fund, secretary of the Union Club, secretary for Home and School, secretary for the House Committee for the Westfield Golf & Country Club (Member), secretary to Women’s Atlantic Council, Director on the Board of the YMCA (first woman), secretary for IODE, volunteer for Meals on Wheels, volunteer for Canadian Cancer Society, longtime member of the Westfield United Church and volunteer service assisting seniors in preparation of personal income tax returns. Barbara is survived by four children: Joseph Alexander Likely III (Sharon) of Calgary, AB, Patricia Margaret Likely-Regan (John) of Parksville, BC, Barbara Dianne MacDonald (Bruce) of Mississauga, ON and Douglas Scott Likely (Pat) of Grand Bay-Westfield, NB; ten grandchildren, Janet Barbara Abernethy (Brian), Joseph Alexander Likely IV (Jennifer), Elizabeth Anne Sarich (Justin), Heather Kathryn Likely (Chris), Michael Anthony Regan (Erin), Catherine (Katie) Jayne Regan, Ian Bruce MacDonald (Valery), Alexander Gray MacDonald (Leah), Fraser DeMill MacDonald (Julie), and Joshua Douglas Likely (predeceased). Matthew Scott Likely ( Roslyn); twelve great grandchildren: Joshua Alexander, Paige Elizabeth and Lucas Dow Abernethy, Ivy Kathryn Sarich and Camryn Elizabeth Likely, Maxwell James Sloan Regan, Charles John Sloan Regan, William Ian MacDonald, Grayson Churchill MacDonald, Annabel Brigette MacDonald, Lauralyn Riley MacDonald and Hannah Dianne MacDonald. Special thanks to Cristina Basuel, Barbara’s long time companion and best friend and her dedicated team of care givers. Thanks to the Parkland Shannex for special consideration and assistance. Barbara will be remembered for her easy smile, sense of humour and love of her garden. Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting hours 2 - 4 pm and 6 - 8 pm on Friday, March 25th, 2016. Funeral Service will be held at Westfield United Church, 133 Nerepis Road on Saturday, March 26th, 2016 at 11:00 am. Private interment in Fernhill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, remembrances to the Westfield United Church or the charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated.
