Obituary of Peter Tobias
With heavy hearts, the family of Peter Tobias, husband of Linda (Henderson) Tobias, announce his passing on Thursday, May 18, 2017 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born June 7, 1929 in Saint John, he was a son of the late Solomon "Saliba" and Jean "Nishmi" (Khoury) Tobias. In addition to his loving wife of 50 years, Linda, Peter is survived by his daughters: Elizabeth Nice (Kirk) and Jennifer Tobias; grandchildren, Charlotte and Kathryn; sisters-in-law, Laura Tobias and Dorothy Henderson; brother-in-law, Brian Henderson; and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his mother-in-law, Dorothy Henderson; sisters, Victoria and Jeanette; brothers: Frederick, David, Louis, Jamiel, and Francis; and brother-in-law, Garth Henderson. Peter spent nearly two-thirds of his life at Ben’s Clothing and Shoes, on his beloved Prince Edward Street. Anyone who walked through the door was met with a big smile and a sincere "Hello, how are you?" Service and quality were his trademark, and no matter your walk of life, everyone was treated the same. He cherished generations of family customers, not always great with a name, but never forgetting a face. There were many tales told leaning over the counter of Ben’s. Occasionally, people would just drop into the store for a visit, but somehow leave with a bright yellow Ben’s bag with something they didn’t even know they needed! He spent 57 wonderful years at Ben’s, and enjoyed going to work every day. Peter was an avid outdoorsman, a lover of nature, and spent many happy years salmon fishing on the Miramichi (the last 20 years often with his son-in-law, Kirk). He was a long-time member of Ducks Unlimited, Beaver Lake Fishing Club, Atlantic Salmon Federation, Riverside Country Club, Canadian Lebanon Association, and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish. Peter’s wife and "girls" were the loves of his life. He worked hard to provide a wonderful life for them, and has left a legacy of a life well-lived. Special thanks to Dr. Patrick Maloney, Dr. Oriano Andreani, and Dr. Michael Barry for their care of Peter. Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424) with visiting on Monday, May 22, 2017 from 6 to 8 pm and Tuesday, May 23, 2017 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 31 Gondola Point Road, Rothesay, on Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at 11 am. Interment will take place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Remembrances to the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation, NB Lung Association, The FoG, Cathedral Building Fund, or a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family. Please place online condolences and remembrances at www.brenansfh.com.
