Obituary of Harold Allen Hutchinson

Have you ever wanted to know how a car engine works or what is the thermal mass of an egg? What about how a computer is built or how it operates? Are you curious about black holes? Constellations? How to cook a steak? Harold Hutchinson was your man with the answers. Following a brief but hard-fought illness, Harold passed peacefully at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Friday, May 5th. Survived by Mo (Maureen Higgins), and the kids (Keegan and Ivy), several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Harold’s zest for life and knowledge, and his generous spirit will be sorely missed. He is predeceased by his parents Ruth Hutchinson (Gillis) and Melvin Hutchinson, his sister Susan McNulty (Hutchinson), and his niece Laura O’Dell (McNulty). Harold’s passion and boundless enthusiasm for computer science and technology development led to great personal and career success in both small start-up companies and large corporations. He had a unique talent for spotting developing trends and opportunities, then moving ideas forward with inspiring excitement and optimism. He founded several technology companies, including his most recent venture, Geode Inc., where he wore the dual hats of president and software designer. Harold’s professional life was his passion and also the cornerstone of many long lasting and close friendships. He was a computer science pioneer and his enthusiasm for learning and teaching touched every part of his life. Also an accomplished musician, Harold will be remembered by bandmates over the years and by the many people he entertained through music. His love for guitars and 70s rock was an enduring part of his spirit. At the core of everything was his family, for whom he was protector, teacher, nurturer, but mostly just "Dad". Harold’s family wishes to express their thanks and gratitude to the many health care professionals who assisted him over the past year and especially the palliative care staff who provided comfort and support through his final days. Donations to the Immunotherapy Program at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre are requested in lieu of flowers. A celebration of Harold’s life will be held at 34 MacAuley Avenue, Saint John NB on Friday, May 12th, between 2:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. We look forward to celebrating his life, with all those who made it special. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB, (506-634-7424).
