Obituary of Richard Thomas Nicholls

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Richard Thomas Nicholls, surrounded by his family and friends at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Tuesday, February 16, 2016. Rick was born in Saint John on June 21, 1958, the son of the late John and Margaret (Smith). He is survived by his loving partner Maureen Bernard, sons Luke (Chelsea Tivendale) and Ethan (Nicolle Bourgeois), siblings John (Cindy), Ruth MacLeod (Ted), Wayne (Donna), and Mike, as well as his former mother-in-law Elga Garnett, many cherished nieces, nephews, and extended family. Beloved by half of the city (the other half just hadn’t met him), Rick was the kindest, gentlest, most generous man anyone who was lucky enough to know him ever met. A loving father, Rick led his sons’ boy scout troops when they were young, coached their sports teams, and proudly watched them grow into men as kind and hardworking as him. No matter what season it was, Rick found a way to enjoy it; summers boating on the Saint John River, winter on his snowmobile, and riding his Harley every opportunity in between. Before starting his successful business, Hi-Roc Construction, Rick worked for Coca-Cola for 18 years. A lifelong north-ender, when he wasn’t boating with Mo, Ricky Nicholls was at Costco, stocking up on ingredients for his famous spaghetti sauce. Rick’s beautiful smile and enormous heart will be deeply missed by everyone whose life he touched. Arrangements are under the direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (634-7424), with visitation on Thursday, February 18 and Friday, February 19, 2016 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm, and 6:00 – 8:00 pm. A funeral will be held on Saturday, February 20, 2016 at St. Peter’s Church (50 Clarendon Street, Saint John) at 10:00 am. Donations in Rick’s memory can be made to the Oncology Department of the Saint John Regional Hospital through the hospital Foundation.
