Obituary of Mary Susan Bates
Peacefully, with her family by her side, Mary Susan Bates passed away on August 31, 2017 at her residence The Village, Loch Lomond Villa. Born in Saint John on January 30, 1944, Susan was the eldest child of the late Edward and Mary V. (Carvell) Bates. Susan was a lifelong resident of the city, residing with her parents in the uptown area for most of her life, as well as in Millidgeville. In her early years, Susan volunteered with the Millidgeville Brownie and Girl Guide troops and she was a member of the St. Peter’s Recreational League. Of recent years, the New Dawn Players, l’Arche and the St. John’s Stone Church Community Group. Susan enjoyed many happy and memorable years with her parents and siblings at their summer home at Westfield Beach. Susan always enjoyed her many friends and their company. Susan is survived by her siblings: Katherine A. Trainor (Joseph), Edward R. (Patricia), David C. (Frankie), Joanne E. Murphy (William) and Peter C. (Dawn). She is also survived by her special Uncle George Carvell, and Aunt Doreen (Carvell) Holt, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents, Susan was predeceased by her nephew Jeffrey Donald Bates and several dear Aunts and Uncles. Susan’s family wish to express their heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to all the staff at The Village, Loch Lomond Villa, Willow House over the past 3 years for the kindness, care and compassion shown to Susan while residing there. Arrangements have been entrusted to Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, (634-7425) where visitation will be held on Thursday, September 7 from 2-4 and 6-8. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, September 8 at 9 AM from St. Peter’s Church, 50 Clarendon Street. Interment will take place at Fernhill Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to L’Arche of Saint John or the Loch Lomond Villa Foundation.
