Obituary of Stephen Edward Ashford

With heavy hearts, the family of Stephen “Steve” Edward Ashford, loving husband of 56 years to the late Gladys May (Sterritt) Ashford, announce his passing on Friday, March 15, 2019 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born January 7, 1923 in Plaster Rock, NB, he was a son of the late Smith and Annie (Cottrell) Ashford.

Steve was an avid sportsman with a love for any competition. He participated in high level baseball and softball for over 20 years. Steve loved fishing on the Miramichi, golfing at Rockwood Park Golf Course, curling at Thistle St. Andrews Curling Club, and playing weekly card games in his living room.

Prior to retirement, Steve worked as a fireman on the riverboat “The S.S. Majestic” on the St. John River system. He drove “2 million miles” during 20 years of safe driving for SMT.

Steve is most remembered for his famous clams and chips. His take-out, “Steve’s Fish & Chips” was a Saint John staple from 1965-1990.

Steve is survived by his daughter, Dawn Marr; granddaughter, Angela Marr (Harrison Duffley); a brother, James Ashford; a sister, Shirley (Ashford) Francis; many nieces, nephews, golf and curling buddies, and his church family. Besides his parents and his loving wife, Gladys, Steve was predeceased by his sons, Stephen Douglas “Dougie” and Gerald Edward
“Gerry”; brother, William Ashford; and sisters: Edith (Ashford) McNally, Etta (Ashford) Parsons, Carolann (Ashford) Mahaney, Ada Connell, and Vesta Stewart.

Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Sunday, March 17 and Monday, March 18, 2019 from 2 to 8 pm.
