Obituary of Thelma Pearl MacDormand
The death of Thelma MacDormand occurred at the Turnbull Nursing Home, Saint John, NB on Sunday, August 29, 2004. Born in Coles Island, NB, Thelma was a daughter of the late Purley H. and Edith (Small) Keirstead. She came to Saint John for work while still a teenager, and met and married her sweetheart, St. Clair MacDormand, in 1942; they celebrated 52 years of marriage before his death in 1994. Thelma was loved by her four children who survive her, Christine of Saint John, Charlene of Halifax, NS, Ruth (Stuart) Hazelwood of St. Albert, Alberta and Bruce (Kristina) of Sudbury, ON; her granddaughters, Anne and Meghan Hazelwood, were greatly loved by her; her sisters, Etta Fletcher of Ottawa and Margaret (Charles) Murray of Saint John; sister-in-law, Thursa Keirstead of Saint John; several nieces, nephews and their families. She was predeceased by her parents; two brothers, Arthur and Fred; and one sister, Mabel Finn. During her life, Thelma was a generous helper. Her attitude was to encourage and support in whatever ways she could help. She and St. Clair enjoyed living, working and raising their family in Saint John. The interests and activities of their children and extended family were the social center of their lives. Thelma enjoyed the company of longtime friends and valued them and the lifetime of experiences they had shared together. Thelma was a Christian in faith and a member of Central Baptist Church. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506) 634-7424, where visitation with the family will be held on Wednesday, September 1, 2004 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A family service will honour Thelma's life and her Christian hope. Interment will be held at the Coles Island Baptist Cemetery with Rev. Kaj Binderup officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Alzheimer Society of New Brunswick or a charity of the donor's choice.
