George H. Cook of 1320 Redhead Rd., Saint John, NB passed away courageously and peacefully after a lengthy battle with cancer Thursday, May 27th 2004 at the Saint John Regional Hospital with his devoted wife of 59 years by his side. Born in Newcastle, New Brunswick, he was the son of Helen (Stables) and Joseph Cook. George was a professional engineer, graduating from Mount Alison University in 1942 and completing his studies at Nova Scotia Technical College in Halifax. Following graduation, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1944 and served until 1946 as a lieutenant. He was employed in the pulp & paper industry for 30 years and self-employed in his field for the last 20 years. He was a lifetime member of the Professional Engineers of New Brunswick and held several positions with the IEEE. George was actively involved in church and community wherever he resided. He served on many church committees in Three Rivers, PQ; Bathurst, NB; and most recently, an elder and member of various committees at Portland United Church, Saint John. As a young adult, he was involved in Boy Scouts of Canada. George was an avid genealogist and enjoyed many years researching his family history. In 1977, George was involved with an international committee to erect a monument in Arran, Scotland commemorating the Highland Clearances from which many of our ancestors were descended. George was also a philatelist and was a member of various stamp societies. He is survived by his loving wife, Gwendolyn (Johnson); son Graeme (Gladys); daughters Joanne Cottell (Sid), Maureen Albert (Gaetan), Susan MacDonnell (Jerry); ten grandchildren, five great grandchildren, one sister Elizabeth 'Betty' Russell (Stewart), and several nieces and nephews.
