Obituary of Muriel Elizabeth Thompson

Thompson, Muriel Elizabeth ? Passed away peacefully in her 100th year on April 4, 2005 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. A resident of Saint John throughout her long life, Muriel was born in the city on March 1st 1906. She was a daughter of the late John and Alberta (Mawhinney) Thompson. Muriel graduated from Saint John High School and the Provincial Normal School, then embarked on a long teaching career in the Saint John school system, where she eventually was appointed Supervisor of Music. There, she had an outstanding series of successes with children's choirs in the New Brunswick Festival of Music curriculum, winning many honours. Muriel also conducted Radio School Choir broadcasts over the CBC, which won international recognition and a major award. She retired in 1961. Muriel was a longtime member and supporter of St. Luke's Anglican Church, where she was at one time Music Director for the Senior Choir as well as the Junior Choir, which won many firsts in festival competitions. She was also an enthusiastic traveler, enjoying many trips with her sisters. She is survived by a niece, Dr. Catherine Ross, nephews Robert Welch, John Welch and Jack Thompson and their families, and cousins Helen Ellis and Rebecca Ellis, as well as her extended “family” of longtime, faithful caregivers. She was predeceased by three sisters ? Elsie Sheldrick, Isobel Thompson, and Dr. Louise Welch ? and by her brother Cecil Thompson. At the request of the family there will be no visiting. A funeral service will take place on Monday, April 11th at 11:00 am at St. Luke's Anglican Church. Interment will be held at Fernhill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
