Obituary of Mary Elizabeth Maddox
The death of Mary E. Maddox of Ridgewood Veteran's Wing, Saint John, occurred on Saturday, September 4, 2004 at her residence. Born in Wicklow, Carleton County, 1916, daughter of the late George Bartholomew and Gertrude (Grant) Maddox. She was a graduate of the Provincial Normal School, class of 1933. She was a graduate of the University of New Brunswick and the Pennsylvania State University. Mary Maddox taught seven years in the Public School of Carleton and Victoria County prior to joining the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941. In the Air Force, she taught Aircraft Recognition to Airgunners and Flight Engineers until her retirement in January 1945 at which time she returned to Public School teaching in Salisbury, NB where she served for four years. She organized and headed the Home Economics department and School Cafeteria in Simonds High School for the next twenty three years. After her retirement from Simonds High School in 1973, she helped Canadian Red Cross and Community College organize a training program for visiting Homemakers. She also taught a number of these courses. For a number of years, she taught Senior Math in Summer School. During her teaching years, she was President of University of Women Club. After retirement, she was President of the Retired teachers Association. She was very active for many years in the Saint John School Milk Fund. Miss Maddox was a member of the Cathedral Parish, Waterloo Street, for a number of years and for thirty-five years a member of Stella Maris Church, East Saint John. She was predeceased by a brother George Grant Maddox. She is survived by two brothers; Paul of Woodstock, and Frank of Fredericton, two sisters; Gertrude Maddox Morris of Ottawa and Joan Maddox Ouellette of Trois Rivieres, P.Q. and several nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews. By request there will be no visiting. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Stella Maris Church, Bayside Drive, on Tuesday, September 7, 2004 at 2:00 PM. Cremation will follow the funeral with burial in the family plot, Saint Bartholomews Church, Clearview, N.B. Arrangements under the direction of Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424).
