Obituary of Robert Jonathan Tingley

Rob spent his first 20 years in Fredericton, New Brunswick. A talented athlete and musician, Rob enthusiastically participated in a wide variety of activities during his school years, including competitive baseball, varsity basketball, school bands, and handbell and vocal choirs. After graduating with honours from Fredericton High School in 1989, Rob spent two years studying Science at the University of New Brunswick before attending medical school at the University of Western Ontario. Rob excelled at his studies, but always found time to bring his energy and spirit to social and extracurricular events. After obtaining his MD in 1995, Rob completed a residency in general pediatrics at the University of Calgary, where he was chief resident for 1998-99. Rob then undertook further subspecialty training in pediatric infectious diseases at the University of Calgary, and later established a practice in general pediatrics and infectious diseases in Saint John, New Brunswick. Rob was a dedicated and compassionate physician who truly cared for his patients. His outstanding teaching skills and ability to inspire medical trainees was recognized through the Professional Association of Residents in the Maritime Provinces Excellence-In-Teaching Award, in 2002-03. Rob's Christian faith was the centre of his life, and his integrity and commitment to his beliefs were a powerful example for so many. He served as a dynamic leader for youth and music programs at churches and summer camps in New Brunswick, Ontario, and Alberta. Rob combined his faith, his medical skills, and his compassion for children all over the world in his active participation in medical missions to Kenya, Nigeria, Ecuador, and the Philippines. Rob always showed great love for his family, including his parents, Sandra and Robert Tingley, grandparents, Verna and the late G. Wilfred Crandlemire, and the late Dorothy and Clarence Tingley, sisters, Tara (Scott) Kennedy and Susan Tingley (Ian Howey), parents-in-law, Jack and Judi Gallagher, brother and sister-in-law Sean (Wendi) Gallagher and Keeley (Gordon) Brost, and nieces and nephews Caitlin and Liam Gallagher, Kieran Brost, and Talia Kennedy. Rob's trademark smile and ability to make others feel special have won him many loyal friends across Canada, and beyond. He met and fell in love with his best friend, Erin Gallagher, while he was studying in Calgary, Alberta. They were married on June 19th, 1999. Rob's happiest moments were spent with his beloved wife, and son Ryan, who has inherited his father's warm smile. Rob's legacy of devotion, enthusiasm, and love, lives on in the family and friends whose lives have been touched by his spirit. The family wishes to express their thanks to the medical community in Saint John and Moncton. We also wish to thank family and friends for their incredible love and support. Visitation will take place on Friday July 2nd, 2-4pm and 7-9pm at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, New Brunswick. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday July 3rd, at 10:30 am at the Kennebecasis United Baptist Church, 383 Hampton Road, Quispamsis, New Brunswick. Burial to take place at the Fredericton Rural Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or African Inland Mission International (Canada) would be appreciated.
