Obituary of Mary Veronica Bates

The death of Mrs. Mary V. Bates, formerly of Millidgeville, wife of the late Edward Bates, occurred on Friday, January 16, 2004, at Rocmaura Nursing Home, Saint John, NB. Born in Saint John, NB, Mary was the daughter of the late Frederick Lyle and Veronica (Cusack) Carvell. She was a loving wife and devoted mother and grandmother who was a lifelong resident of this city and had enjoyed summering with family and friends at Westfield Beach. She was a former member of Saint John the Baptist Parish and was a member of St. Pius X Parish. Mary is survived by three sons, Edward R. (Patricia) and their children, Jennifer, Alison and Christopher, of Saint John; David C. (Frankie) and their children, Melissa, Edward and Gerald, of Rothesay; and Peter C. (Dawn) and their son, Peter, and predeceased son, Jeffrey, of Saint John, NB. Three daughters, M. Susan and Katherine A. (Joseph) Trainor, and their children, Joe and Mary Kate, of Saint John, NB; Joanne (William) Murphy and their children, Michael, Peter and Patrick, of Dartmouth, NS; two brothers, George and Frank (Dot) Carvell, of Saint John, NB; three sisters, Kay McCarthy, of Bloomfield, NB , Doreen Holt and Betty (George) Douglas of Saint John, NB, several nephews and nieces. Besides her husband, Edward, Mary was also predeceased by a grandson, Jeffrey Bates; a sister, Florence Jenkins, and a brother, Hamel Carvell. Resting at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John NB, (506-634-7424). Visitation on Saturday from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. . A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Pius X Church, Somerset Street on Monday at 2:00 p.m. Interment will take place at Fernhill Cemetery. The family have requested that remembrances be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society or to a charity of the donors' choice.
