Obituary of Douglas Mitchell Barnes

After a long and courageous battle with cancer Douglas Mitchell Barnes passed away peacefully on November 5, 2003 surrounded by family and friends at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Saint John August 7, 1954 he was the son of Audrey (Williams) Barnes and the late John K. (Jack) Barnes, he was a graduate of Millidgeville North High School in 1972 and was a longtime employee with Sears in Saint John, NB and Halifax, NS. Doug was a very giving person, actively involved with numerous volunteer organizations in both Saint John and Halifax, including the CNIB, Big Brother Big Sisters, Toast Masters and the Saint John Aquatic Centre. Recently he was made an honourary member of the Seniors' Group at the Admiral Beatty Complex. Doug was most proud of being both co-founder and CEO of B.S. Wednesday. Doug is survived by his mother, Audrey; his two daughters, Mary Allyson and Heidi Marie and their mother, Cathy McNamee and her husband, Robert of Saint John; brother, Thomas B. and his wife Tanya of Toronto, On; two sisters, Sandra E. and her husband Stuart McIllwraith of Quispamsis, NB, and Nancy V. and her husband Charles Clowater of Orleans, On. and brother Bill Larson and his wife Joanne and daughter Alexandra, Toronto, On; nieces and nephews, Meaghan, Sean, Gregory and Marlene McIllwraith, and Jonathan, Maxwell and Rachel Clowater; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. The family would express their sincere gratitude and thanks for the love and care shown to Doug by the the homecare workers, extra-mural staff, Dr. Brian Wheelock, Dr. George Kolyvas and nurses and staff of the N.I.C.U. and 4B South, Saint John Regional Hospital. Resting at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506-634-7424) with visitation on Friday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held from Brenan's Chapel on Saturday, November 8, 2003 at 11:00 a.m.. Remembrances may be made to the C.N.I.B., or Brain Tumor Foundation of Canada in Doug's name.
