Obituary of Justina Elizabeth Cushing
Justina Elizabeth Cushing previously of 375 Windsor Street, Saint John West, NB, and more recently of Toronto, Ontario, wife of the late Wallace W. Cushing passed away on February 5, 2004. She was a daughter of the late Carl Alfred and Jessie (Johnston) Wittrien and had resided in Saint John most of her life. After 16 years as a part time worker in the New Brunswick Museum archives, she retired in 1973 from the position of Library Assistant. Mrs. Cushing devoted many off-duty hours researching and transcribing from files of New Brunswick newspapers, those items which had reference to individual emigrants to the port of Saint John and to recorded deaths and burials on Partridge Island. She was co-author of A Chronicle of Irish Immigration to Saint John, New Brunswick, 1847 published by the New Brunswick Museum in 1979. Mrs. Cushing was also an Honorary Life Member of the Museum, a member of Heritage Canada, and a member of the Animal Rescue League. Survived by one daughter, Mrs. Ralph C. (Anne) McLeod, one grand daughter, Mrs. George (Jamie) DeWolf, one great grand daughter, one great grandson and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Cushing was predeceased by a brother, John Alfred (Larry) Wittrien in 1975, and by her sister, Mrs. Arnold M. (Frances) Neilson in 1990. Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (506-634-7424), in charge of arrangements. Cremation will take place in Toronto and interment to follow in the spring in Saint John, NB. Remembrances may be made in her memory to the charity of your choice.
