Obituary of Donald Joseph Holmes
The death of Donald Joseph Holmes of Kars, New Brunswick, husband of 45 years to Mary Veronica “Bonnie” (O’Neill) Holmes, occurred peacefully, surrounded by his loving family and friends, on Sunday, June 24, 2007 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Saint John on August 13, 1941, he was the son of the late Donald I. and Frances (Dever) Holmes. Don was employed by General Bakeries until 1969 and was employed by Irving Paper until his retirement in 1998. He was active in youth sports and involved with Central Minor Hockey as a Coach, North End Little League as a coach and president nd the Saint John and the New Brunswick Speed skating Association as a coach and president. He was an avid bowler with the Fairview Wednesday and Friday Bowling Leagues and the Bionic Bowling League. Don also enjoyed hunting with his buddies at Bald Hill. Don is survived by his loving wife Bonnie and was a wonderful father to Wendy Ingraham (Terry) of Saint John, Sharon Daigle (Eric) of Quispamsis, Gerald (Brenda) and Michael (Veronica) both of Hampton and loving grandfather to Andrew, Chelsea, Kati, Jessica, Matthew, Jeremy, Devin, MacKenzie and Brooke, one great grandson, Connor, several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by two brothers, Alfred (Betty) and Peter (Deborah), both of Saint John. He was predeceased by one sister, Kathleen O’Connor. The family wishes to thank the Doctor’s and Nurses at the Saint John Regional Hospital, Dr. Winston Lee, Sussex Extra Mural and those in Palliative Care. Resting at Brenan’s Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Tuesday and Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter’s Church, Clarendon Street, Saint John on Thursday, June 28, 2007 at 11:00 AM. Interment in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, remembrances to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.
