Obituary of Frederick Ernest Hale
Hale, Frederick Ernest – The death of Frederick Ernest Hale of Saint John, NB, husband of Rita (Wiggins) Hale, occurred on Friday, May 2, 2008 at the Ridgewood Veterans Wing. Born in Fredericton, NB on December 13, 1922, he was a son of the late Frederick and Elsie (Parsons) Hale. Fred was a veteran of the Canadian Navy and served during World War II. He survived being torpedoed while on convoy duty en route from Halifax to the United Kingdom (HMCS Chebogue - off the Azores, October 4, 1944). After the war, Fred worked in the grocery business in Saint John. He ran a successful grocery and butcher shop (Hale’s Grocery) on Russell Street in East Saint John for a large number of years. Many patrons will be familiar with his friendly and jovial personality while doing business. Survived by his loving wife Rita for what would have been 60 years on September 29th,2008; two sons, Fred Jr. (Patricia) of Rothesay, NB and Robert “Bob” (Valerie) of Bedford, NS; two brothers, Gerald (Carmel) of Redbank, NB and Richard of Halifax, NS; four grandchildren, Stefanie and Ashley of Rothesay, Gillian and Jonathan of Calgary, AB; and one great-granddaughter, Morgan; several nieces and nephews including Patsy Robinson of Toronto, ON. Predeceased by three brothers, Victor, Leslie and William; and one sister, Margaret Winchester. Arrangements are under the care of Brenan’s Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint john (506) 634-7424. At the request of the family there will not be any visiting at the funeral home. Funeral Service will be held from St. Paul’s Church, Rothesay on Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at 11 am. Interment will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers remembrances may be made to any charity of choice. www.brenansfh.com
